NEW DELHI – A tight contest marked the recent Delhi Assembly elections in six northeast constituencies affected by the 2020 riots. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) each secured three seats in a near-even split.

AAP secured victories in Seelampur, Babarpur, and Gokalpur. In Seelampur, AAP’s Chaudhary Zubair Ahmad won by a significant margin of 42,477 votes over BJP’s Anil Kumar Sharma. Gopal Rai, AAP’s Delhi convenor, retained his Babarpur seat, while Surendra Kumar secured victory for AAP in Gokalpur.

The BJP won Mustafabad, Karawal Nagar, and Ghonda. Notable BJP wins included Ajay Mahawar in Ghonda and Kapil Mishra in Karawal Nagar. Mohan Singh Bisht secured Mustafabad for the BJP, despite a strong challenge from AAP’s Adeel Ahmad Khan.

The Congress party performed poorly across all six constituencies, failing to win any seats and securing only single-digit percentage vote shares. The results highlight the continuing close contest between AAP and BJP in the sensitive northeast Delhi region.
