Sat Feb 08 20:33:10 UTC 2025: ## Delhi Assembly Elections: BJP Makes Gains, Women’s Representation Remains Low

**New Delhi, February 9, 2025** – The BJP made significant gains in the recently concluded Delhi Assembly elections, winning five out of the 70 seats with women candidates. While AAP’s Chief Minister Atishi retained her Kalkaji seat, the BJP secured victories in Shalimar Bagh (Rekha Gupta), Greater Kailash (Shikha Roy), Najafgarh (Neelam Pahalwan), and Wazirpur (Poonam Sharma). This is a decrease from the eight women elected in 2020.

The results show a decline in women’s representation in the Delhi Assembly, falling from 8 to 5 seats, representing only 7.14% of the total assembly. This is significantly lower than the 33% target set by the 2023 women’s reservation act. Despite major parties promising women-centric schemes before the election, the overall impact on women’s representation remains minimal. Over 71 lakh women were eligible to vote in the election.
