**BEIRUT, Lebanon –** An Israeli drone strike in Lebanon’s eastern Bekaa Valley has killed six people and wounded two, sparking renewed tensions between the two countries. The attack, which targeted the Shaara area near Jennata on Saturday, comes amid a fragile ceasefire agreement reached in November.
The Israeli military claimed the strike targeted Hezbollah operatives at a site used for the production and storage of “strategic weapons,” alleging a violation of the ceasefire. The agreement, which included a 60-day implementation period ending January 26th, has seen Israel continue military operations against alleged Hezbollah sites despite the truce. Israel cited a lack of full Lebanese enforcement as the reason for delaying its troop withdrawal from southern Lebanon.
Lebanon’s National News Agency reported the casualties, while Hezbollah official Ibrahim Moussawi condemned the strike as a “dangerous violation and blatant aggression,” echoing previous calls for an end to Israeli actions. This latest incident follows a similar Israeli strike on January 31st in the same region, which resulted in at least two deaths. The ongoing Israeli actions, despite the ceasefire, threaten to destabilize the already fragile peace in the region. The Lebanese army’s deployment alongside UN peacekeepers, as stipulated by the ceasefire agreement, is intended to replace Hezbollah forces in southern Lebanon. However, the continued Israeli attacks cast doubt on the long-term viability of the truce.
