**Loughborough, UK** – In a unique 12-week study conducted by the University of Loughborough, identical twins Hugo and Ross Turner, 36, tested the impact of low-carb versus low-fat diets on strength, fitness, and aesthetics. The professional adventurers, spurred by their social media followers, embarked on the experiment with sports scientists monitoring their progress.
Ross followed a high-carbohydrate diet, while Hugo adhered to a high-fat regimen. Both consumed approximately 3,500 calories daily, provided by a food delivery service, with a 500-calorie difference in macronutrient composition. Hugo’s diet featured high-fat foods like olive oil and nuts, while Ross consumed high-carb options like pasta and rice.
The results, published last month, showed Hugo experienced a 59% increase in strength and gained 3kg of muscle, compared to Ross’s 56% strength increase and 1kg muscle gain. However, Hugo reported feeling more fatigued during intense exercise and constantly hungry despite eating frequently. Ross, on the high-carbohydrate diet, lost slightly more fat and performed better in cardiovascular tests.
While both brothers concluded that a balanced diet is optimal for daily life, they suggest adjusting macronutrient ratios before specific activities. They propose increasing carbohydrates before high-intensity activities like running, and favoring a higher-fat diet for lower-intensity activities such as walking. The study highlights the potential benefits of personalized dietary approaches tailored to individual activity levels and goals.
