**Lucknow/Erode, February 8, 2025** – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a resounding victory in the Milkipur assembly bypoll in Uttar Pradesh, while the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is poised for a comfortable win in the Erode East bypoll in Tamil Nadu.
In Milkipur, BJP candidate Chandrabhanu Paswan defeated Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Ajit Prasad by a massive margin of 61,710 votes. This win marks a significant victory for the BJP, avenging their only assembly seat loss in the Ayodhya district during the 2022 state elections. Paswan’s victory surpasses the previous record margin in Milkipur, set in 1967. The SP alleged unfair practices during the voting process, a claim rejected by the BJP.
The Erode East bypoll saw a much different scenario. With most opposition parties, including the AIADMK, boycotting the election, the DMK candidate, Chandhirakumar VC, maintained a substantial lead throughout the counting, ultimately securing a decisive victory. The Naam Tamizhar Katchi (NTK) was the main contesting party against the DMK. Tensions arose during the vote counting, with accusations of vote-buying leveled by the NTK candidate. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin accused the AIADMK and BJP of indirectly attacking the DMK through the boycott and subsequent accusations.
The Milkipur bypoll was triggered by the election of SP leader Awadhesh Prasad to the Lok Sabha, while the Erode East bypoll was necessitated by the death of Congress MLA EVKS Elangovan. Both elections saw significant political maneuvering and accusations of irregularities from the losing parties.
