Sun Feb 09 12:44:56 UTC 2025: **BJP Wins Uttar Pradesh By-election, DMK Retains Tamil Nadu Seat**
LUCKNOW/ERODE, INDIA – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a resounding victory in the Milkipur assembly by-election in Uttar Pradesh, defeating the Samajwadi Party (SP) by a margin of over 61,000 votes. BJP candidate Chandrabhanu Paswan garnered 146,397 votes, a significant win seen as a recovery for the party after a surprising loss in the Faizabad Lok Sabha constituency earlier this year. The Milkipur by-election, held in the politically crucial Ayodhya region, was viewed as a battle for political dominance, particularly given the BJP’s previous defeat in Faizabad, a key constituency associated with the Ram Mandir movement. UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath celebrated the victory, attributing it to the development work undertaken by the BJP government. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, however, accused the BJP of misusing electoral machinery.
Meanwhile, in Tamil Nadu, the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) retained the Erode (East) assembly seat, with its candidate V.C. Chandhirakumar winning by a comfortable margin of 91,558 votes against Naam Tamilar Katchi’s M.K. Seethalakshmi. The by-election was necessitated by the death of Congress MLA E.V.K.S. Elangovan. The DMK’s win reinforces its stronghold in the region. The AIADMK and BJP boycotted the Erode East by-election.
