**New Delhi, India** – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a resounding victory in the Delhi Municipal Corporation elections, ending nearly three decades of opposition in the national capital. The BJP won 48 out of 70 seats, a significant gain compared to previous elections. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had held power since 2015, suffered a major setback, winning only 22 seats – down from a commanding 62 in 2020. The Congress party failed to win any seats for the third consecutive election.
This defeat marks a significant blow to AAP’s leadership. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal lost his seat in New Delhi to BJP’s Parvesh Sahib Singh, widely considered a potential chief ministerial candidate. Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia also lost his seat. However, Minister Atishi secured victory in Kalkaji.
Reacting to the results, Mr. Kejriwal congratulated the BJP and said AAP accepts the people’s verdict. Ms. Atishi acknowledged the setback but vowed to continue the party’s fight against what she termed the BJP’s “dictatorship and hooliganism.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi attributed the BJP’s success, in part, to the support of the Purvanchal community. He addressed party workers, emphasizing the party’s commitment to development for all of Delhi.
Exit polls, which accurately predicted the outcome, had previously suggested a BJP victory. AAP’s dominance in Delhi had begun in 2015 when it won a landslide victory, securing 67 out of 70 seats. The party repeated this success in 2020, winning 62 seats.
Analysts suggest the AAP’s recent struggles, including the Delhi liquor policy case which led to the imprisonment of Kejriwal and Sisodia, and controversies surrounding government spending, may have contributed to their loss. The BJP effectively capitalized on these issues during the campaign.
