Sun Feb 09 11:29:29 UTC 2025: ## BJP Storms Back to Power in Delhi After 26 Years; Atishi Resigns as Chief Minister

**New Delhi:** The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has swept the Delhi Assembly elections, winning a landslide victory with 48 seats in the 70-member house. This marks a stunning return to power for the BJP after more than two decades, leaving the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) with only 22 seats – a significant drop from their 2020 win of 62. The Congress failed to secure a single seat.

Chief Minister Atishi, who assumed office last September, tendered her resignation today following the election results. Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena subsequently dissolved the Delhi Assembly. Atishi’s resignation came a day after the BJP’s decisive win, which saw prominent AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Saurabh Bharadwaj, lose their seats. Atishi herself retained her Kalkaji seat.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the BJP workers and thanked the voters, promising that the party would fulfill its promises and focus on Delhi’s development. A grand swearing-in ceremony for the new Chief Minister is expected next week, after the Prime Minister’s return from a trip to the US. While the BJP is yet to officially announce its choice for Chief Minister, newly elected MLA Parvesh Verma, who defeated Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency, is considered a strong contender.

Mr. Kejriwal conceded defeat, stating that the AAP accepts the people’s mandate and congratulating the BJP on their victory. The BJP’s victory is being attributed to a variety of factors, including voter dissatisfaction and a strong campaign by the BJP. The party’s performance marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Delhi.
