Sun Feb 09 01:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Bangalore Metro Fares Soar, Sparking Commuters’ Outrage
**Bangalore, February 9, 2025** – Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) announced a significant fare hike for Namma Metro, effective Sunday, February 10th, triggering widespread dissatisfaction among commuters. The maximum fare has jumped from ₹60 to ₹90, while other increases affect various distances and ticket types.
The minimum fare for the shortest distance (0-2 km) remains ₹10, but the next bracket (2-4 km) increases from ₹15 to ₹20. Fares continue to rise incrementally until reaching the maximum ₹90 for journeys exceeding 30 km. This follows a recent 15% hike in bus fares across Karnataka.
BMRCL’s statement explains that the increase is based on recommendations from a fare fixation committee appointed by the Union government. The committee, after considering operational costs and passenger feedback, deemed the revision necessary for financial sustainability.
Smart card users will now receive a 5% discount during peak hours and an additional 5% during off-peak hours (before 8 a.m., 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., and after 9 p.m. on weekdays), totaling 10% off-peak. They will also receive a 10% discount on Sundays and national holidays. QR code discounts have been eliminated, and the minimum smart card balance has risen from ₹50 to ₹90. Tourist card and group ticket prices have also increased.
The fare hike has angered many commuters, especially those who rely on the metro daily. Puneeth Kumar, a daily commuter, criticized the increase, citing overcrowding and delays on the Yellow Line as reasons why a fare hike is unwarranted. Mohan Prasad, a college student, expressed concern that the increased fares could discourage metro usage and worsen traffic congestion. The dissatisfaction highlights the impact of rising transport costs on Bangalore residents.
