**Singapore, February 7, 2025** – Former Singaporean Transport Minister S. Iswaran, serving a 12-month jail sentence for corruption, has been granted home detention, Channel News Asia reported. Iswaran, who pleaded guilty last September to charges of accepting bribes from businessmen, began his sentence in October 2024.
The Singapore Prison Service (SPS) stated that Iswaran’s good conduct in prison, low risk of re-offending, and strong family support contributed to his eligibility for the Home Detention Scheme. Under the scheme, he will serve the remainder of his sentence at his residence under specific conditions, including electronic monitoring and reporting to SPS for counseling. He will be allowed to leave his home for work during working hours.
Iswaran admitted to receiving approximately SGD 403,300 (USD 300,000) in gifts and valuables over seven years from businessmen Ong Beng Seng and Lum Kok Seng, with whom he had official dealings during his tenure. He also pleaded guilty to obstructing justice. While Ong’s case is ongoing, the Attorney-General’s Chambers will not press charges against Lum. Iswaran resigned from his ministerial post in January 2024 and voluntarily returned SGD 380,305.95 in illegally obtained funds. Approximately 44% of eligible inmates in Singapore were granted home detention last year.
