CHENNAI, INDIA – February 8, 2025 – Employees of Samsung India’s Sriperumbudur factory have been staging a sit-in strike for four days, demanding the reinstatement of three suspended colleagues and protesting the company’s alleged attempts to undermine their union.
According to E. Muthukumar, president of the Samsung India Employees Union, the company is trying to force employees to join a company-formed committee, viewing this as an attempt to weaken the union. He claims that the suspensions were issued without proper procedure, following the workers’ refusal to join the committee and their request to meet with Korean management. The union further alleges that the company offered a ₹3 lakh interest-free loan as an incentive to join the committee.
A union member corroborated these claims, stating that the suspensions were issued without show-cause notices.
Samsung, in a statement, denies these allegations, asserting that the suspended workers engaged in unlawful actions disrupting workplace peace. The company maintains that it has filed complaints with relevant authorities and that the suspensions were in accordance with Indian law to protect the work environment. Samsung also stated that it remains open to dialogue with workers, facilitated by the government, to reach a collective agreement. The company explicitly denied forcing workers to join the committee or leave the union.
The strike highlights ongoing tensions between Samsung and its workforce in India, raising concerns about labor relations within the electronics manufacturing sector.
