**Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh & Erode, Tamil Nadu –** Preliminary results from two high-stakes by-elections, one in Uttar Pradesh and another in Tamil Nadu, paint a picture of contrasting victories. In Uttar Pradesh’s Milkipur constituency, BJP candidate Chandrabhanu Paswan maintains a significant lead over his Samajwadi Party (SP) rival, Ajit Prasad, after multiple rounds of counting. Meanwhile, in Tamil Nadu’s Erode East, the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is projected to win decisively, extending its stronghold in the region.
In Milkipur, Paswan’s lead has steadily increased throughout the counting process. The by-election, necessitated by the previous MLA’s election to the Lok Sabha, is seen as a crucial test for both BJP and SP, especially after SP’s recent victories in the region. BJP leaders celebrated the early trends as a rebuke of SP’s “politics of lies and nepotism,” while SP leaders maintained confidence in a potential upset.
The Erode East by-election presented a different scenario. With the main opposition parties boycotting the poll, DMK candidate V.C. Chandrakumar secured a commanding lead early on against Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) candidate M.K. Seethalakshmi. Chandrakumar expressed confidence in the DMK’s victory, attributing it to the government’s performance and a lack of widespread discontent.
Both by-elections saw significant voter turnout. The final results are expected to solidify the trends seen in the early stages of the counting process, offering insights into the political landscape of both states. The Milkipur results, in particular, will be closely watched as an indicator of the BJP’s and SP’s standing ahead of future elections.
