**Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh** – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) celebrated a resounding victory in the Milkipur assembly by-election in Uttar Pradesh on February 9th, coinciding with their win in the Delhi Assembly elections. The BJP’s Chandrabhanu Paswan secured a significant lead over Samajwadi Party’s (SP) Ajit Prasad, son of sitting MP Awadhesh Prasad, whose Lok Sabha win necessitated the by-election.
After 16 rounds of counting, the BJP garnered 82,789 votes compared to the SP’s 42,239. Paswan’s victory margin was over 40,000 votes. The high voter turnout of 65.35% surpassed the 2022 assembly election figures.
The win is seen as a significant victory for the BJP, especially given that Milkipur was the only assembly seat in Ayodhya district that they lost in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. The by-election was considered a prestige battle between the BJP and SP, with the BJP viewing it as an opportunity to avenge their 2024 Faizabad Lok Sabha defeat.
Celebrations erupted in Varanasi with BJP supporters expressing their joy with drums and sweets. Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s role in the victory, tweeting, “With Modi, it’s possible; everything else is impossible.”
BJP MP Ravi Kishan attributed the Delhi and Milkipur wins to public trust in the BJP and Prime Minister Modi. BJP MP Dinesh Sharma stated that the Milkipur result reflected the SP’s broken arrogance. He also made a controversial remark about Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the Yamuna river.
Despite allegations of irregularities from the SP, which claimed booth capturing, the BJP maintained its substantial lead throughout the counting process. The SP’s Awadhesh Prasad admitted defeat, calling on his party to accept the loss gracefully. The BJP’s decisive win in Milkipur further solidifies their position in Uttar Pradesh.
