Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a resounding victory in the Milkipur assembly by-election, defeating the Samajwadi Party (SP) by a significant margin. Preliminary results showed the BJP candidate, Chandrabhanu Paswan, leading by over 35,000 votes after several rounds of counting. The SP candidate, Ajit Prasad (son of sitting MP Awadhesh Prasad), trailed considerably. Other candidates, including one from Azad Samaj Party, received significantly fewer votes.
The by-election, held on Wednesday, February 5th, saw a voter turnout exceeding 65%, higher than the 2022 assembly elections. The contest was viewed as a prestige battle between the BJP and SP, particularly given its location in the politically significant Ayodhya district. The seat became vacant after SP’s Awadhesh Prasad won the Faizabad Lok Sabha seat.
Throughout the counting process, BJP maintained a steadily increasing lead, with BJP leaders expressing confidence in their victory. SP leader Awadhesh Prasad alleged irregularities and booth capturing by BJP, accusations that were denied by the BJP.
The victory is seen as a significant win for the BJP, marking a comeback after losing Milkipur in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. The BJP’s win coincided with the BJP’s projected victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, with BJP leaders attributing both wins to the trust placed in Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The SP, meanwhile, conceded defeat and urged acceptance of the electoral outcome. The results are being seen by political analysts as a significant shift in the political landscape of the region.
