**The Hague/Washington D.C.** – A wave of international condemnation has followed former US President Donald Trump’s imposition of sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC). Trump’s executive order, authorizing economic sanctions and travel bans against ICC staff, cites the court’s investigation into alleged war crimes committed by Israeli officials, including Benjamin Netanyahu, as justification.
The move has drawn sharp criticism from numerous countries, including long-standing US allies. A joint letter signed by 79 nations, including Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Mexico, and Germany, warns that the sanctions will “increase the risk of impunity for the most serious crimes and threaten to erode the international rule of law.” Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that the sanctions jeopardize the ICC’s crucial role in holding powerful individuals accountable. Similar concerns were voiced by officials in France, the UK, and the European Commission.
The ICC itself has denounced the sanctions as an attempt to undermine its independent work. Amnesty International’s Secretary General, Agnès Callamard, called the action “vindictive” and a threat to the global pursuit of justice. The UN’s human rights agency also urged a reversal of the decision.
Trump’s order also targets ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan, according to multiple sources within the court. This follows a similar action taken against former ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda in 2020. The sanctions raise serious concerns about the ICC’s ability to function effectively and independently. The court is currently investigating alleged war crimes in Palestine, Ukraine, and Afghanistan.
While the US and Israel are not members of the ICC, the court’s jurisdiction extends to individuals, regardless of nationality, who commit crimes within the court’s purview. Netanyahu, who praised Trump’s action, is facing an arrest warrant issued by the court. The warrants have been issued for his alleged war crimes in Gaza.
Egypt and other Arab nations have also expressed strong opposition to Trump’s proposed takeover of Gaza, a plan that has been widely condemned as a blueprint for ethnic cleansing. This plan adds to the ongoing tensions and uncertainties surrounding the fragile ceasefire in Gaza. The ICC’s ongoing investigations, therefore, hold even greater significance in the face of this political turmoil.
