**New Delhi, [Date]** – Early trends in the Delhi Assembly election results show the BJP crossing the majority mark, defying exit poll predictions that favored the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for a third consecutive victory. While AAP initially surged ahead, the BJP quickly regained its lead in a closely contested race. The Congress, widely expected to perform poorly, is currently leading in only one seat.
The AAP, which first came to power in 2013 with 28 seats but lasted only 49 days, achieved landslide victories in 2015 (67 seats) and 2020 (62 seats). AAP leader Atishi expressed unwavering confidence in their victory, predicting a “huge mandate” for Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s fourth term. She described the election as a battle between “good and evil,” and “work and hooliganism.”
However, early trends show top AAP leaders, including Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Atishi, trailing in their respective constituencies. Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit, contesting against Kejriwal, ruled out any post-poll alliance with AAP.
Pre-election predictions varied widely. Chanakya Strategies projected 25-28 seats for AAP, 39-44 for BJP, and up to three for Congress. DV Research predicted 26-34 for AAP, 36-44 for BJP, and zero for Congress.
The BJP aims for a return to power after 1998, while the Congress seeks to revive its fortunes. The 2020 election saw a turnout of 62.82%, down from 67.47% in 2015. Counting of votes began at 19 locations across Delhi under tight security. The final results are expected to determine the future political landscape of the national capital.
