**Chennai, February 8, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies-Criminal Investigation Department (CS-CID) has announced a significant crackdown on the illegal smuggling and hoarding of Public Distribution System (PDS) commodities. In 2024, the department registered 11,085 cases, resulting in the arrest of 11,571 individuals.
The operation, involving regular patrols to monitor the distribution of essential goods, led to the seizure of goods valued at ₹9.24 crore. This included 33,980 quintals of rice, 18,898 litres of kerosene, and 1,984 cooking gas cylinders. Authorities also impounded 2,012 vehicles used in the smuggling operations. All cases are being prosecuted under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955. The initiative aims to protect the interests of poor and middle-class families who rely on the PDS for essential commodities.
