Sat Feb 08 10:41:58 UTC 2025: ## AAP’s Delhi Defeat Shakes Opposition, Raises Questions About Future

**New Delhi, February 8, 2025** – The Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) resounding defeat in the Delhi Assembly elections marks a significant setback not only for the party but also for the entire opposition, according to Swaraj India co-founder and psephologist Yogendra Yadav. The BJP’s victory, ending over 26 years of AAP rule in the national capital, strengthens the BJP’s national dominance.

Yadav, a former AAP member, stated that the loss represents a blow to those who envisioned an alternative political force in India. He highlighted the defeat of both Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia as particularly significant setbacks, raising serious concerns about the AAP’s future, particularly given their anticipated struggles in Gujarat and the potential for BJP efforts to destabilize the party’s only remaining stronghold in Punjab.

Yadav attributed the AAP’s loss to several factors. He pointed to the damage to the party’s “honest image” due to the liquor scam and the “Sheesh Mahal” controversy (referring to renovations of the Delhi Chief Minister’s residence). The constant friction between the AAP government and the Delhi Lieutenant Governor, coupled with neglect of basic services, also likely alienated voters.

Furthermore, Yadav observed a shift in voting patterns. Some Modi supporters who previously voted for the AAP in assembly elections remained loyal to the BJP this time, potentially due to the aforementioned issues.

The support extended to the AAP by several parties within the INDIA opposition alliance, including the Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, and Shiv Sena (UBT), revealed underlying tensions within the alliance, according to Yadav. He also suggested that an AAP-Congress alliance was unlikely to have succeeded.

The BJP’s victory, Yadav concluded, strengthens their project of national dominance and poses an increased challenge for the opposition. The AAP’s defeat underscores the need for the opposition to address internal divisions and strategize effectively against the BJP’s growing influence.
