**New Delhi** – A political storm erupted in the Indian Parliament today over the deportation of over 100 Indian nationals from the United States. Opposition parties, led by the Congress, staged a fiery protest outside Parliament, accusing the government of inaction and demanding accountability.
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning his silence on the issue, particularly given his close relationship with former US President Donald Trump. She demanded answers from the Prime Minister and External Affairs Minister, highlighting the allegedly inhumane treatment of the deportees, who were reportedly handcuffed and shackled during their return.
Similar sentiments were expressed by Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who questioned the government’s commitment to its “Vishwaguru” (world leader) aspirations in light of the incident. He also raised concerns about the lack of protection offered to women and children among the deportees.
The protests, which involved several prominent opposition leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and KC Venugopal, featured symbolic handcuffs and placards condemning the treatment as an “insult to India.” Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla even held up handcuffs as a visual representation of the alleged mistreatment.
Parliamentary proceedings were disrupted earlier in the day due to the uproar, forcing adjournments. While Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla appealed for calm and assured the MPs that the government was aware of the situation, the opposition remained steadfast in its demand for a parliamentary discussion on the matter. Several Congress MPs had already submitted adjournment notices to facilitate such a debate.
The deportees, allegedly undocumented immigrants, arrived in Amritsar, Punjab, on Wednesday aboard a US Air Force plane. The opposition’s outrage centers on the alleged inhumane conditions of their deportation and a perceived lack of diplomatic intervention from the Indian government. The incident is expected to further fuel political tensions in the ongoing Parliament session.
