NEW ORLEANS — The Pro Football Hall of Fame’s 2025 class will be unveiled Thursday night, marking the first time the newly implemented stricter enshrinement rules will be in effect. These changes, enacted in August 2024 following concerns voiced by Deion Sanders and others about a perceived lowering of standards, aim to maintain the Hall’s exclusivity.
The Hall has seen a significant increase in inductees since 2000, prompting the stricter criteria. The average number of inductees per year has risen substantially, particularly since 2015 when coaches and contributors were separated from modern-era players. The new rules aim to reduce the number of inductees closer to the average of previous years.
This year’s 15 modern-era finalists include notable names like Eli Manning and Adam Vinatieri, but the new process will make enshrinement more challenging. Instead of the previous system where five of fifteen finalists required 80% of the vote, now only seven finalists remain after cuts, and each voter chooses five, meaning an 80% threshold will be much harder to reach. The possibility exists for fewer than five modern-era inductees for the first time in almost two decades. The rules for senior, coach, and contributor finalists have also been tightened.
The Hall of Fame will use a multi-tiered system to select inductees if the 80% threshold isn’t met for enough candidates, prioritizing those with the most votes at various stages of the selection process.
The impact of the revised rules remains to be seen, but the announcement promises to reveal a potentially smaller and arguably more selective class of 2025.
