Fri Feb 07 15:08:02 UTC 2025: ## Illegal Abattoir Discovered Operating Near Closed Mangaluru Slaughterhouse

**Mangaluru, February 7, 2025** – A shocking discovery of an illegal abattoir operating near the closed Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) slaughterhouse in Kudroli has led to its immediate closure. Mayor Manoj Kumar ordered the closure Friday after a firsthand inspection revealed piles of animal carcasses, bones, and skins within the premises of a private farm located directly in front of the three-year-closed MCC facility.

The illegal operation came to light when reporters questioned Mayor Kumar regarding claims that no illegal slaughtering was occurring near the closed abattoir. Accompanied by the Deputy Mayor and several councilors, Kumar inspected the private farm, which purportedly supplied wholesale goat meat. Upon opening several rooms, they found overwhelming evidence of illegal animal slaughter. One room contained heaps of animal skulls and bones, while another held stacks of animal hides. A locked enclosure, opened by councilor Kadri Manohar Shetty, revealed machinery used for animal slaughter.

Mayor Kumar stated unequivocally that the MCC had not granted permission for this operation and ordered its immediate closure. He reaffirmed that the MCC slaughterhouse has been closed for three years to allow for the construction of a new, modernized facility compliant with all environmental regulations, including the installation of a water treatment plant to prevent pollution of the Phalguni River. The new abattoir is expected to be completed soon. Further, the Mayor directed the removal of sheds containing dry waste that have accumulated near the government abattoir.
