The Ministry of External Affairs revealed that Indian nationals secured 72.3% of all H1B visas between October 2022 and September 2023, citing US Citizenship and Immigration Services figures. The briefing also addressed the impact of international conflicts on Indian students. The number of Indian students enrolled in Ukrainian universities drastically decreased from 21,928 before the conflict to a mere 1,802 as of November 1, 2024. In contrast, approximately 900 Indian students remain in Israel, primarily pursuing STEM degrees. Following the October 2023 attacks in Israel, “Operation Ajay” facilitated the return of 1,309 Indian nationals, including 768 students, most of whom have since returned to their studies. While the government confirmed ongoing engagement with the US on H1B visa matters, it stated that data on Indians returning from abroad due to economic downturns is unavailable. The responsibility for reintegrating returning migrants rests with individual state governments.
