**Nagercoil, February 7, 2025** – A large fire ravaged the Valampurivilai dumping yard in Nagercoil on Friday morning, sending thick smoke billowing across a 2-kilometer radius. The blaze, which quickly spread across acres of accumulated waste, prompted a response from the Fire and Rescue Services department. Four fire engines and an earthmover were deployed to combat the inferno.
Local residents expressed anger and frustration over the recurring fires at the dump yard, which they say is located too close to residential areas. Simon, a resident of Vadalivailai, criticized the location, stating, “The dump yards are supposed to be located on the outskirts of the city and here the situation is the other way round. Every summer this happens and we are tired of repeatedly requesting the authorities to relocate the yard to the outskirts.”
Nagercoil Mayor R. Mahesh and Corporation Commissioner Nishanth Krishna visited the site to assess the situation. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
