**Bengaluru, February 7, 2025** – The remarkable success story of Nandini, Karnataka Milk Federation’s (KMF) flagship brand, has its roots in a dilapidated dairy facility in Kudige, Kodagu. This unremarkable building, established in 1955, served as the birthplace of Karnataka’s first dairy cooperative, long before Nandini became a household name.
A recent visit to Kudige revealed the stark contrast between the crumbling original dairy and the modern facility operating just 500 meters away. While the old building, now neglected and in disrepair, stands as a testament to the brand’s humble origins, Nandini itself has grown into a globally recognized brand, competing with giants like Amul. The brand’s reach extends from sponsoring international cricket teams to launching diverse new products and expanding into new markets across India.
Locals expressed concern over the deteriorating state of the historical site, urging the government or KMF to restore it as a museum or heritage site. Former KMF Managing Director A.S. Premnath emphasized the historical significance of Kudige, highlighting the region’s unexpected role in establishing the dairy cooperative movement that eventually led to the formation of KMF in 1974, with support from the World Bank. He recounted the early days, reminiscing about the production of sought-after “Coorg Ghee.”
Despite its achievements, KMF faces challenges. While 2024 saw a 14% increase in milk procurement and a 10% rise in sales, the federation is grappling with a milk surplus, leading to reduced procurement prices for farmers and delayed government incentives. Farmers are demanding higher prices and timely payment of government subsidies.
The name “Nandini,” surprisingly, wasn’t chosen by KMF officials but was a suggestion from consumers in 1983 during a branding initiative. The brand’s success, according to experts, is attributed to strong consumer loyalty and the dedication of lakhs of dairy farmers. However, political controversies, particularly concerning potential competition with Amul, continue to periodically impact the brand. Despite these challenges, Nandini remains a powerful symbol of Karnataka’s dairy industry and its rich cultural heritage.
