Fri Feb 07 17:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Nationwide School and Office Closures in Iran Due to Severe Weather and Energy Concerns
**Tehran, Iran –** A nationwide wave of school and office closures will affect at least 27 Iranian provinces on Saturday, February 9th, due to a combination of severe weather and energy conservation measures. The decision, announced following an emergency meeting chaired by the Minister of Interior and attended by representatives from the Disaster Management Organization, Red Crescent Society, and key ministries, cites the need to stabilize the national energy grid amid heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures.
The closures encompass schools and government offices in Tehran, Alborz, Kerman, Semnan, Hamedan, Zanjan, South Khorasan, Razavi Khorasan, North Khorasan, Markazi, Qom, East Azerbaijan, West Azerbaijan, Lorestan, Isfahan, Mazandaran, Gilan, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, Kurdistan, Ilam, Kermanshah, Fars, Qazvin, Golestan, Ardabil, Khuzestan, and Gilan provinces. Furthermore, all Iranian stock exchanges, including the Tehran Stock Exchange, will also be closed. The Ministry of Education has confirmed nationwide school closures with online learning implemented instead.
While the official reason given for the closures is energy grid stability, the closures follow a pattern of widespread shutdowns in recent weeks attributed to various factors including energy reserves, air pollution, and inclement weather. Social media users have voiced concerns about insufficient energy reserves and speculated about government efforts to manage currency fluctuations. Iran has experienced recurring energy shortages in both summer and winter months, leading to power and gas outages and public discontent.
