**Geneva, Switzerland** – Prince Rahim al-Hussaini has been named the 50th Imam of the Nizari Ismaili Muslims and the fifth Aga Khan, succeeding his father, the late Aga Khan IV, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 88. The announcement was made Wednesday following the unsealing of the late Aga Khan’s will.
The 53-year-old Rahim inherits leadership of a community numbering between 12 and 15 million Ismailis worldwide. Known for their extensive philanthropic work and establishment of institutions such as hospitals and universities, the Ismaili community has a disproportionately large global impact.
Experts anticipate a continuation of the Aga Khan Development Network’s legacy under Rahim’s leadership. The network, founded by the previous Aga Khan, has focused extensively on tackling the climate crisis, a focus expected to remain a priority.
Rahim takes the reins of a vast portfolio, inheriting the considerable wealth of the Aga Khan family and institutions, estimated to range from $1 billion to $13 billion, encompassing diverse holdings. His father, known for his close ties to royalty, philanthropic endeavors across Asia and Africa, and his impressive business acumen, leaves a significant legacy of both wealth and humanitarian work. The new Aga Khan is expected to build on this substantial foundation.
