**New Delhi** – Exit polls predict a stunning return to power for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Delhi Assembly elections, ending the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) 10-year reign. A majority of the polls released Wednesday forecast a comfortable BJP victory, with an average of 39 seats, exceeding the 36 needed for a majority in the 70-member assembly. This would mark a significant reversal of fortune for the BJP, which secured only single-digit seats in the previous two elections.
The predicted outcome represents a major setback for AAP Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who stepped down last year amid corruption allegations. While some polls, like Mind Brink and WeePreside, still predict an AAP win, most indicate a significant reduction in their seat count, placing them around 30 seats. The Congress, meanwhile, is projected to win only 1-2 seats.
The BJP’s potential success is attributed to several factors, including the party’s recent victories in Haryana and Maharashtra, the alleged liquor policy scam and “Sheesh Mahal” controversy surrounding the AAP, and the recent budget’s tax cuts benefiting the middle class. Furthermore, analysts suggest the Congress may have eroded AAP’s support base among minority communities, aiding the BJP.
However, the exit polls’ accuracy remains questionable, as past elections have demonstrated their unreliability. AAP leader Reena Gupta expressed confidence in a historic victory for her party, citing past instances where exit polls underestimated AAP’s performance.
The results will have implications beyond Delhi, particularly in Bihar, where elections are scheduled for later this year. The substantial Purvanchali voter base in Delhi (one-third of the electorate) provides a significant indicator of the political climate in eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
The final results will be announced on February 8th.
