**CHENNAI, INDIA –** Three men have been arrested in connection with the sexual assault of an 18-year-old woman in a moving auto-rickshaw in Chennai on Monday night. The victim, a migrant worker from Salem, was waiting for a bus at the Kilambakkam bus terminus when she was forcibly abducted by the auto-rickshaw driver and subsequently assaulted by him and two accomplices at knifepoint.
The woman’s screams alerted passersby, who contacted the police. While police pursued the auto-rickshaw, the perpetrators abandoned the victim and fled. Police subsequently apprehended the three suspects.
Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai criticized the state government, led by Chief Minister MK Stalin, for its failure to ensure women’s safety, citing this incident and the recent sexual assault case at Anna University as evidence of a broader problem. He highlighted the increasing accessibility of drugs as a contributing factor to the rise in sexual assault cases.
This latest incident has sparked outrage and renewed calls for stronger measures to protect women in the state. The attack follows a similar incident at Anna University last month, which also resulted in significant protests.
