**Aizawl, February 4, 2025** – Mizoram observed World Cancer Day 2025 today under the theme “United by Unique,” with a focus on improving cancer care and prevention. The event, held at the Taxation Auditorium, MINECO, was organized under the National Health Mission’s National Programme for Prevention & Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases & Stroke (NPCDCS).

Dr. Vanlalsawma, Principal Director of the H&FW Department, emphasized the crucial role of caregivers and patients in cancer treatment, urging healthcare workers to intensify their efforts. He called for proactive measures to curb the rise of cancer cases in the state.

Dr. Eric Zomawia, Mission Director of the State NHM, welcomed attendees. Dr. Zirsangliana Chhangte, Gynecologist Oncologist at MSCI Zemabawk, delivered a presentation on this year’s theme. Dr. Jeremy L. Pautu, Director of MSCI Zemabawk, presented a report highlighting the history of cancer care in Mizoram, including the introduction of Cobalt Therapy in 1998 and the recent addition of a new TCCC machine in 2024.

Dr. Catherine Lalmuanawmi, State Nodal Officer for NP-NCD, delivered the closing remarks. The event noted that World Cancer Day has been observed globally since 2000, and in Mizoram since 2014. The NPCDCS currently conducts Population Based Screening across the state. According to the Mizoram State Cancer Institute, over 2100 individuals were registered as cancer patients at Zemabawk Cancer Hospital in 2023.
