Wed Feb 05 14:54:49 UTC 2025: ## Yermarus Thermal Power Station Sets New Electricity Generation Record

**Bengaluru, February 5, 2025** – The Yermarus Thermal Power Station (YTPS) in Raichur district, Karnataka, achieved its highest-ever electricity generation in January 2025, producing 718.619 million units (MU). This surpasses the previous record of 718.085 MU set in December 2021. The two units at YTPS, each with a capacity of 800 megawatts (MW), contributed to this record output.

According to Gaurav Gupta, Additional Chief Secretary of the Energy Department and managing director of Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL), the increase is due to the resolution of previous technical issues with the help of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). These improvements allowed for optimized machine performance and increased generation.

The record comes amidst a period of increased electricity demand. National consumption rose by 2.7% in January 2025 to 13,749 crore units compared to the previous year. Mr. Gupta noted a 10% growth in electricity demand in Karnataka and emphasized that the increased generation at YTPS, along with efforts to enhance output at other KPCL plants, will be crucial in meeting the anticipated surge in demand during the upcoming summer months. KPCL’s thermal power generators achieved a record average of 3,200 MW in the summer of 2024. The state government is proactively addressing minor technical issues in all KPCL thermal plants to ensure maximum generation capacity by February 2025. Further measures, including power swapping arrangements, are also being implemented to manage the growing electricity needs.
