**Madurai, February 5, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu government announced the release of water from the Vaigai dam to irrigate 94 tanks under the Nilaiyur Extension Canal for 10 days, starting Thursday, February 6th. This special release, totaling 300 cusecs of water, is intended to benefit both livestock and the local population.
The government order cites the fulfillment of traditional irrigation needs under the Vaigai river water-sharing agreement and the availability of 2,752.24 mcft of water in storage as of January 31st as reasons for this exceptional measure. The water release will continue until February 15th.
