**Orebro, Sweden** – A 35-year-old unemployed man is believed to be responsible for the deadliest mass shooting in Swedish history, leaving at least 11 dead at an adult education center in Orebro on Tuesday. Police confirmed the gunman, who possessed a hunting license and is believed to have acted alone, is among the deceased.
The attacker, whose identity has not yet been released, was previously unknown to authorities and had no criminal record or known gang affiliations. Police have stated that they believe the attack was not ideologically motivated. Swedish Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer confirmed the attacker was male.
According to reports from Aftonbladet, the shooter was a recluse with limited contact with his family for years. SVT reported that he, like many Swedes, legally owned a hunting weapon, which was used in the attack. He resided in Orebro.
The targeted adult education center provides secondary education opportunities for those who did not complete their schooling or achieve sufficient grades for higher education. It’s located on a campus that also includes schools for children.
The incident has once again highlighted Sweden’s relatively high rate of gun ownership, primarily for hunting purposes, though significantly lower than in the United States. A recent increase in gang crime has also raised concerns about illegal weapons proliferation in the country.
