Wed Feb 05 10:59:30 IST 2025: ## Tamil Nadu Forms Committee to Study Pension Schemes Amidst OPS Demand

**Chennai, February 5, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu government has announced the formation of a three-member committee to evaluate the state’s pension schemes. The committee, which includes IAS officers Gagandeep Singh Bedi and Pratik Tayal (Member Secretary), and former Director of Madras School of Economics K.R. Shanmugam, will investigate the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), and the recently introduced Unified Pension Scheme (UPS). They are tasked with submitting a comprehensive report with recommendations within nine months.

The CPS, implemented for state government employees joining service after April 1, 2003, has faced significant opposition. Employees have been advocating for the reinstatement of the OPS, which predates the CPS. The committee’s formation follows the introduction of the UPS by the Union government on January 24, 2025.

Frederic Engels, State coordinator of the CPS Abolition Movement, criticized the government’s move, calling it a “betrayal” and a delaying tactic ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. He urged the DMK government to fulfill its election manifesto promise and immediately reinstate the OPS. The committee’s findings and recommendations are expected to significantly impact the future of pension schemes in Tamil Nadu.
