Khartoum, Sudan – February 5, 2025 – The Sudanese army has achieved significant gains against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group in recent weeks, reversing the tide of a nearly two-year-long civil war. Analysts attribute the army’s success to a combination of factors including the RSF’s strategic blunders, internal divisions, dwindling supplies, and the army’s strengthened capabilities after rebuilding and rearming.
The army’s recent advances include the recapture of Wad Madani, the capital of Al-Jazira State, the lifting of sieges on key Khartoum military bases, and the seizure of the Al-Jaili oil refinery. These gains have been aided by the reinstatement of the Special Operations Forces, known for their urban warfare expertise.
Conversely, the RSF’s extended supply lines from their Darfur stronghold, coupled with internal rifts and the high-profile defection of a commander, have weakened their position. Their attempt to expand control into central and eastern Sudan has proven strategically costly and logistically challenging. While accusations of UAE funding persist, there’s no evidence the RSF has lost this vital support.
Although the army’s progress is substantial, analysts caution against declaring an imminent end to the conflict. The RSF has shifted tactics, targeting civilian infrastructure in a bid to create chaos and maintain leverage. The ongoing siege of El-Fasher, a major city in Darfur, remains a critical point of contention. Should the RSF capture El-Fasher, it would significantly strengthen their negotiating position and effectively formalize a division of the country. Despite the RSF commander’s defiant pronouncements, the army’s momentum appears to have shifted the balance of power in the conflict.
