Wed Feb 05 05:03:59 UTC 2025: ## Over 2,900 Killed in India by Hydro-Meteorological Disasters in 2024-25

**New Delhi, February 5, 2025** – More than 2,900 people lost their lives due to hydro-meteorological disasters in India during 2024-25, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) revealed to the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai, in a written statement, reported that 2,936 deaths, along with the damage of 363,381 houses and the loss of 61,826 cattle, were recorded as of January 27th.

While the MHA does not centrally track damage caused by disasters, the figures represent data compiled from various state governments. The statement emphasized that primary responsibility for disaster management and relief rests with individual state governments, utilizing the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF). The central government supplements these efforts through logistical and financial support, with additional funding from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) allocated for “severe” disasters following assessments by Inter-Ministerial Central Teams (IMCTs). Fourteen such IMCTs have been deployed across various states to assess damages from the recent calamities.
