**Kolkata, February 5, 2025** – A West Bengal Sessions Court has sentenced Lal Singh Oraon to death for the brutal murder of his wife, Sakhi Oraon, and their 18-month-old daughter. The killings occurred on March 27, 2023, at the Looksan tea garden in Nagrakata, Jalpaiguri district. Oraon used a hacking weapon to kill his family members. Following the crime, he attempted suicide but was apprehended by police.
Additional Sessions Judge Biplab Roy of the 3rd Court, Jalpaiguri, delivered the verdict, stating that Oraon showed no potential for rehabilitation. The judge’s order emphasized the callous nature of the crime and expressed concern that Oraon, if released, might pose a threat to his own relatives who testified against him.
This is the second death penalty handed down by Judge Roy in recent months. In October 2024, he sentenced Gopal Das to death for the murder of his wife in 2019. The recent spate of death sentences follows a series of high-profile cases involving the sexual assault and murder of women and children in West Bengal, with investigations and sentencing often completed within six to eight weeks.
