**Tehran, February 5, 2025** – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed U.S. President Donald Trump’s renewed “maximum pressure” policy against Iran as a doomed-to-fail strategy, echoing its failure during Trump’s first term. Araghchi, speaking following a cabinet meeting, reiterated Iran’s commitment to its nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty obligations and denied any pursuit of nuclear weapons. He cited Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s longstanding religious decree prohibiting nuclear weapons as further evidence.
Trump’s reimposition of the policy, announced Tuesday, follows allegations of Iranian pursuit of nuclear weapons capabilities. Iran vehemently denies these claims, maintaining its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes. Araghchi asserted that if the primary concern is Iran’s non-pursuit of nuclear weapons, “it is achievable and is not much of a problem.”
This renewed tension comes despite recent constructive talks between Iranian and European officials (Britain, France, and Germany) in January. While a new round of talks is anticipated within a month, a date has yet to be confirmed. The previous “Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action” (JCPOA) nuclear deal, abandoned by the U.S. in 2021 under Trump’s first administration, imposed restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. Following the U.S. withdrawal, Iran gradually rolled back its commitments under the JCPOA.
