Wed Feb 05 15:53:39 UTC 2025: ## Kerala Cabinet Defers Bill Allowing Private Universities Amidst Opposition
**Thiruvananthapuram, February 5, 2025** – The Kerala Cabinet postponed a bill that would allow private universities in the state following opposition from the Communist Party of India (CPI). CPI ministers raised concerns about the lack of study on the bill’s impact on existing state universities and the absence of discussion on crucial aspects like fee structures, exemptions, and reservation policies. They argued that the introduction of private universities could hinder the progress of state universities striving to improve their academic performance and attract international students.
The decision comes despite a recommendation from the Shyam B. Menon-chaired Commission for Reforms in Higher Education and the State Budget’s mention of exploring opportunities for foreign universities. Student organizations, including the All India Youth Federation and the All India Students Federation, also voiced their opposition, fearing the commercialization of education.
Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan demanded an apology from CPI(M) leaders to T.P. Sreenivasan, a former vice-chairman of the Kerala State Higher Education Council, citing past incidents of protest against the introduction of foreign universities. He highlighted the CPI(M)’s previous opposition to similar initiatives during the United Democratic Front’s governance. The bill will now undergo further discussions before being presented to the Assembly.
