**Lisbon, Portugal –** Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, passed away in Portugal on Tuesday at the age of 88, his network and the Ismaili community announced. The spiritual leader, who ascended to his position at just 20 years old while a Harvard undergraduate, leaves behind a legacy of extensive philanthropic work and a vast financial empire built upon religious tithes.
The Aga Khan, considered a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, dedicated his life to improving the lives of Ismaili Muslims and others in developing countries. His Aga Khan Development Network, with an annual budget of approximately $1 billion, focused on healthcare, housing, education, and rural economic development in over 30 countries. Numerous hospitals bearing his name stand as testaments to his commitment, particularly in regions lacking basic healthcare, including Bangladesh, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan.
His influence extended beyond philanthropy. He was a renowned horse breeder, represented Iran in the 1964 Winter Olympics, and established an architecture prize, promoting Islamic architecture at institutions like MIT and Harvard. He also spearheaded the restoration of numerous historical Islamic structures globally.
The Aga Khan’s successor will be chosen from among his male progeny or other relatives, as per the Ismaili community’s website. The name will be revealed after the reading of his will in Lisbon. Global leaders and organizations expressed their condolences, praising his compassionate leadership and commitment to global development. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called him a “very good friend” and noted he would be “deeply, deeply missed.”
The Aga Khan will be buried in Lisbon; the date of the funeral is yet to be announced. He is survived by three sons, a daughter, and several grandchildren.
