**Paulding County, GA –** A Georgia man has been sentenced to 475 years in prison for running a large-scale dog fighting operation, marking what is believed to be the longest sentence ever handed down for such a crime. Vincent Lemark Burrell, 57, was convicted on 93 felony counts of dog fighting and 10 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty. Each dog fighting charge carried a five-year sentence, while each animal cruelty charge added one year.
The case, detailed in court documents, involved the raising and training of over 100 pit bulls for illegal fighting. Paulding County District Attorney KC Pagnotta stated that the sentence sends a strong message against animal cruelty, declaring, “Paulding County will not accept or condone the inhumane treatment of animals—especially the violence and abuse associated with dog fighting.”
Burrell’s attorney, David Heath, has filed a motion for a new trial, arguing the verdict is unsupported by the evidence. The lengthy sentence comes after a two-year investigation and prosecution led by State Animal Crimes Resource Prosecutor Jessica K. Rock.
