**COIMBATORE, February 5, 2025** – Over ₹3,505.87 crore in bank loans has been disbursed to 57,241 women’s self-help groups (SHGs) in Coimbatore district over the past four years under the Tamil Nadu State Rural Livelihood Mission (Mahalir thittam). The initiative, according to the district administration, aims to uplift women below the poverty line through skill development, loan provision, and promotion of self-employment.

The 16,338 active women’s SHGs in Coimbatore are distributed across various areas, including Coimbatore City (5,356), municipalities (1,248), town panchayats (2,034), and panchayat unions (7,700). Recent loan disbursements show significant variation across different blocks within the district, with Periyanaickenpalayam block receiving a substantial ₹2,885 crore for 355 SHGs, while others received considerably less. Loan disbursement has steadily increased over the past three years, from ₹769.53 crore in 2021-22 to ₹923 crore in 2023-24. The target for 2024-25 is ₹1,229 crore, with ₹956.81 crore already disbursed.

Beyond financial assistance, women from these SHGs are also actively participating in the ‘Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam’ healthcare outreach program, with a total of 404 women health volunteers deployed across rural and urban areas.
