Tue Feb 04 15:31:14 IST 2025: ## Global Cancer Crisis: India Ranks Third in Cases as World Marks Cancer Day
**New Delhi, February 4** – World Cancer Day highlights a global health crisis, with millions succumbing to the disease annually. According to the World Cancer Research Fund International, China leads with 4.8 million cancer cases, followed by the United States with approximately 2.3 million. India ranks third, reporting 1.4 million cases. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports over 20 million new cases and nearly 10 million cancer deaths worldwide in 2022.
This year’s World Cancer Day focuses on prevention and reducing mortality. A key concern is hereditary cancer. While genetic mutations can increase the risk of cancer transmission across generations, experts emphasize that only about 10% of cases are directly inherited. Cancer itself isn’t directly passed down, but a genetic mutation present in a parent’s egg or sperm cell can be inherited by their child.
For accurate diagnosis, a biopsy is considered the most effective test. This procedure involves extracting tissue samples from suspected cancerous areas for laboratory analysis to differentiate between cancerous and non-cancerous cells.
