NEW YORK, NY – Tony Award-winning actress Idina Menzel makes her highly anticipated return to Broadway this February in the new musical *Redwood*, a show she co-created. The production, opening February 13th at the Nederlander Theatre, marks Menzel’s return to the very stage where she performed in *Rent* 29 years ago.

*Redwood*, which had its out-of-town run at La Jolla Playhouse, follows Jesse, a woman who escapes into the unknown after a life-altering event, finding solace and resilience amidst the towering redwoods of Northern California. Menzel herself drew inspiration from a personal experience climbing a redwood, describing it as a spiritual and humbling encounter. This theme of resilience, mirroring the interconnected root systems of the redwoods, is central to the musical’s message.

The show features a gravity-defying element, with Menzel performing aerial sequences hundreds of feet in the air, partnered with a giant redwood replica named Stella, in collaboration with the pioneering aerial dance company, Bandaloop. While Menzel is no stranger to physically demanding roles (having originated the role of Elphaba in *Wicked*), this presents a unique challenge and a new level of physicality.

*Redwood* also represents a significant creative leap for Menzel; this is her first time co-writing a musical. The project, born 15 years ago from a story about a climber living in a redwood, was finally brought to fruition during the pandemic. The creative team includes longtime collaborator Tina Landau and composer Kate Diaz, a newcomer to Broadway, whose fresh approach to music complements the show’s cinematic scope.

Menzel’s return carries profound significance, inspiring a new generation of performers who grew up with her iconic performances. The actress emphasizes the importance of authenticity and vulnerability in her work, creating a powerful connection with audiences. *Redwood* promises a unique blend of breathtaking visuals, emotionally resonant music, and Menzel’s undeniable stage presence, making it a must-see event of the Broadway season.
