Tue Feb 04 09:41:56 IST 2025: **Man City on Verge of £50m Deadline Day Signing**

Manchester, UK – Manchester City are poised to complete the £50 million signing of Porto midfielder Nico Gonzalez before tonight’s transfer deadline. While negotiations over the payment structure remain ongoing, all parties are optimistic a deal will be finalized. Gonzalez is reportedly undergoing a medical in Portugal.

The 23-year-old, who previously played for Barcelona’s academy, joined Porto in 2023 for €8.5m. Barcelona are entitled to 40% of any profit made on his sale, although this could decrease to 20% depending on a potential future purchase option by Porto.

This move comes after City’s already significant January spending, which includes the acquisitions of Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, and Vitor Reis, totaling £130m. The club has been searching for a new defensive midfielder, with Gonzalez emerging as their top target despite previous interest in players like Douglas Luiz. The addition of Gonzalez could bring City’s total January spending close to £180 million.

Sky Sports pundits offered mixed reactions. While some, like Kevin Hatchard, highlighted Gonzalez’s potential fit within Pep Guardiola’s system and long-term admiration from the club, others expressed concerns. Paul Merson questioned the need for another midfielder given Rodri’s importance and suggested the signing might indicate panic over securing a top-four finish. Tim Sherwood warned about the risk of signing a player from a different league and questioned his ability to improve City’s chances against top European competition. However, Statman Dave emphasized the need for defensive midfield reinforcement, highlighting Gonzalez’s potential to fill that role effectively.
