**Manchester, England** – Manchester City have smashed their own January transfer record, securing the signing of midfielder Nico González from Porto in a deal worth €60 million. The Premier League champions initially had a €40 million bid rejected but ultimately met González’s release clause, although payment will be structured in installments.

The move comes after City’s midfield vulnerabilities were brutally exposed in their 5-1 defeat to Arsenal on Saturday. González, 23, has impressed since his €8.44 million move to Porto from Barcelona in 2023, contributing 18 goals and assists in 68 appearances. Negotiations were complicated by Barcelona’s 40% sell-on clause.

This signing brings City’s January spending to a staggering €218 million, the second-highest total in the history of the January transfer window. It’s also City’s second most expensive acquisition this month, behind the €75 million arrival of Omar Marmoush.

“This is the perfect opportunity for me at this stage of my career,” González said. “I am 23 and I want to test myself in England. There’s no better club than Manchester City for me to do that.”

The addition of González represents City’s sixth signing of a remarkably active January transfer window.
