**Gandhinagar, Gujarat – February 4, 2025** – The Gujarat government announced today the formation of a five-member committee tasked with assessing the need for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state and drafting a bill accordingly. The committee, to be chaired by retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Desai, will submit its findings within 45 days.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel made the announcement at a press conference, stating that the government will review the committee’s report before deciding on the implementation of a UCC. The committee also includes retired IAS officer C.L. Meena, advocate R.C. Kodekar, educationist Daxesh Thakar, and social worker Gita Shroff. The government’s decision to form this committee follows growing national debate surrounding the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code across India.
