NEW DELHI – Delhiites head to the polls today, February 5th, to elect their next government in a closely contested three-way race between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Congress. Over 1.56 crore voters will cast their ballots across 13,766 polling stations. Results will be announced on February 8th.
The AAP, led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, is seeking a third consecutive term, having won decisive victories in 2015 and 2020. The BJP, which hasn’t held power in Delhi for 27 years, and the Congress are aiming to break AAP’s dominance. High-profile contests include the New Delhi seat, where Kejriwal faces BJP’s Parvesh Verma and Congress’ Sandeep Dixit.
The campaign period saw intense campaigning, punctuated by allegations of violations of the model code of conduct. FIRs were filed against AAP’s Atishi and BJP’s Manish Bidhuri for alleged MCC violations. Atishi also criticized the Election Commission, accusing it of jeopardizing democracy. Meanwhile, AAP candidates predicted a sweeping victory, highlighting the party’s welfare schemes.
The Election Commission has banned the release of exit polls until 6:30 PM today. Numerous establishments will be closed on Wednesday, Delhi’s voting day. Along with the Delhi Assembly elections, by-polls are also being held in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Voters are reminded to carry their EPIC or other approved identification.
