**Beijing, China** – China announced a sweeping response to new US tariffs, launching an anti-monopoly investigation into Google and adding US fashion giant PVH Corp. (owner of Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein) and biotech firm Illumina to its list of “unreliable entities.”
The State Administration for Market Regulation stated that Google is suspected of violating China’s Anti-Monopoly Law, triggering the formal investigation. This action follows the US government’s announcement of a 10 percent tariff increase on Chinese goods, a measure attributed by President Trump to punishing countries for insufficient efforts to curb illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
The Ministry of Commerce justified adding PVH and Illumina to the unreliable entities list, citing violations of normal market transaction principles, disruption of trade with Chinese companies, and discriminatory practices against Chinese businesses. PVH is already under investigation for allegedly boycotting Xinjiang cotton, a region where China faces accusations of human rights abuses.
The Chinese government emphasized that these measures aim to protect national sovereignty, security, and development interests. The escalating trade tensions between the US and China continue to fuel retaliatory actions on both sides.
