**Mumbai, February 4, 2025** – The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), India’s wealthiest civic body, today presented its budget for 2025-26, totaling a record ₹74,427 crore. This represents a ₹7,410 crore increase from last year’s revenue. The budget, presented by BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, allocates a significant ₹43,166 crore (58% of the total) to capital expenditure, a ₹598 crore increase over the previous year.
Key highlights of the budget include:
* **Infrastructure Improvements:** A major focus is on road concretization, overseen by IIT Mumbai, aiming for completion by May 31, 2025 to mitigate monsoon disruptions. The BMC will also deploy 100 battery-powered suction machines to combat dust pollution. A shift to CNG for bakeries from traditional firewood is also planned.
* **Healthcare Initiatives:** 10% of the budget is earmarked for healthcare, including a citywide “Aarogya Seva Aaply Dari” house-to-house health checkup program. The KEM Hospital, celebrating its centenary, will construct a new centenary tower. Additionally, 45 of the BMC’s 470 school buildings are undergoing upgrades, with completion expected by March 2025 for 45 and the remainder by next year. 3814 out of 7934 classrooms have been digitalised and 622 new teachers have been appointed. Organic farming gardens have been implemented in 100 BMC schools.
* **Waste Management:** The BMC aims to process and dispose of 70 lakh metric tons of legacy waste by June 2025 to reclaim 24 hectares of land, building on the 40.93 lakh metric tons already processed by December 31, 2024. Further processing of 18.37 lakh metric tons is planned for the first quarter of 2025, with an additional 10.7 lakh metric tons planned for 2025-26. The Kanjurmarg dumping ground will be included in the waste-to-energy project, and the Mulund dumping ground will be reclaimed.
The budget comes as the BMC operates under an administrator following the expiration of corporator terms in March 2022. Commissioner Gagrani emphasized this as the largest budget in the BMC’s history.
