Sun Feb 02 23:04:08 IST 2025: ## Man Arrested in Udupi Digital Extortion Case

**Mangaluru, February 2, 2025** – Police in Udupi have arrested a 24-year-old man in connection with a digital extortion case where a resident was tricked into transferring ₹89 lakh. Kiran, a resident of Yadgir district, was apprehended in Dharwad. Authorities recovered ₹5 lakh in cash and a mobile phone from him, along with an additional ₹2 lakh believed to be part of the extorted funds. Police allege Kiran transferred ₹2 lakh to one C.K. Mohammed Nisham.

The victim, Kinnar Santosh Kumar, reported that in September 2024, he received a call from someone posing as a Telecom Regulatory Authority of India officer. The caller falsely claimed 17 FIRs were registered against Kumar for illegal advertising and harassment. A subsequent video call from someone claiming to be an inspector from Andheri East alleged Kumar’s account was being used for money laundering. The caller then coerced Kumar into transferring the large sum, threatening “digital arrest” until the payment was made. The Cyber Economic and Narcotic Crime (CEN) police are continuing their investigation.
